Dr. Kamal Woods and the Vertrae® team specialize in Barricaid®, the newest technology designed to help prevent disc reherniation. This advanced surgical implant was developed specifically for patients with large tears (defects) in the disc wall following lumbar disc herniation. Barricaid® works by closing the defect left behind after a discectomy—reducing the chance of symptoms returning and minimizing the need for future surgery.
At Vertrae®, we’re known for precision spine care that’s personal, conservative-first, and always looking ahead. As a leader in outpatient and minimally invasive spine surgery, we bring together:
Because the best results come from the right procedure, at the right time—with the right team behind you.

Barricaid® is a small, implantable device designed to close a large hole in the disc wall after a discectomy. Roughly the size of a pencil eraser, it combines a flexible polymer mesh with a titanium bone anchor. It works by sealing the defect in the disc wall, helping to reduce the risk of reherniation and the need for repeat surgery.

During a discectomy, your surgeon removes the damaged disc material pressing on a nerve. But if the outer wall of your disc (the annulus) has a large tear, there’s a higher chance that the disc could reherniate.
That’s where Barricaid® comes in. After the disc fragment is removed:
This device helps restore structural integrity to the disc—while preserving motion and reducing complications.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a lumbar disc herniation, you’re not alone—this is one of the most common causes of lower back and leg pain. During a standard discectomy (the procedure used to remove the herniated disc material), your surgeon clears the disc fragments pressing on your nerves.
But what happens next depends on what’s left behind.
If the outer wall of your disc has a large defect or tear (something that often isn’t fully known until surgery), there’s a significantly higher chance the disc could reherniate—even after a successful discectomy. That’s where Barricaid® comes in.
Barricaid® is designed to close the defect in the disc wall and help prevent the disc from reherniating—reducing the need for another surgery later.
