Steroid Injections

At Vertrae®, steroid injections are a minimally invasive treatment option provided by Dr. Kamal Woods to offer targeted relief for spinal inflammation and pain.

These injections reduce swelling and pressure on nerves, delivering effective pain relief for patients with conditions such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Steroid injections, also known as corticosteroid injections, involve administering a concentrated dose of anti-inflammatory medication directly into the affected area, such as the spinal joints, epidural space, or surrounding tissues. The medication helps reduce inflammation, which in turn alleviates pain and improves function. The effects can vary, but many patients experience significant relief from symptoms.

Steroid injections at Vertrae® can be effective for treating a variety of spinal conditions, including:

  • Herniated Discs: Reducing inflammation and pain caused by displaced disc material pressing on nearby nerves.
  • Spinal Stenosis: Alleviating nerve compression symptoms by decreasing swelling in the epidural space.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Managing pain associated with the degeneration of spinal discs.
  • Facet Joint Pain: Targeting inflammation in the small joints located between the vertebrae of the spine.
  • Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Providing relief for pain arising from the SI joint connecting the spine to the pelvis.
  • Radiculopathy: Treating pain that radiates from the spine to other areas due to nerve irritation or compression.

The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  • Preparation: You’ll be positioned comfortably, and the injection site will be cleaned and sterilized.
  • Anesthesia: A local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.
  • Injection: Using fluoroscopy or ultrasound for guidance, the healthcare provider will carefully inject the steroid medication into the targeted area.
  • Recovery: After the procedure, you may be monitored for a short time to ensure your comfort and safety before being discharged.

While steroid injections are generally safe, there are potential side effects and risks that patients at Vertrae® should be aware of, including:

  • Pain at the Injection Site: Mild discomfort or soreness may occur in the area where the injection was given.

  • Temporary Increase in Pain: Some patients may experience a temporary worsening of pain before the medication takes effect.

  • Infection: Although rare, there is a slight risk of infection at the injection site.

  • Nerve Damage: There is a very small risk of nerve damage during the injection.

  • Changes in Blood Sugar Levels: For patients with diabetes, corticosteroids can temporarily raise blood sugar levels.

  • Hormonal Changes: Repeated injections can potentially lead to hormonal imbalances or other systemic effects, so Dr. Woods will evaluate the need for additional injections carefully.

At Vertrae®, we prioritize patient safety and comfort, ensuring that all procedures, including corticosteroid injections, are performed with the utmost care and professionalism. If you have any concerns about the procedure or potential side effects, our team is here to address your questions and provide the information you need for informed decision-making.
