Why Does My Back Hurt Like This?

Understanding the Signs of a Herniated Disc

Vertrae® | Minimally Invasive Spine Experts | Serving Dayton, West Chester, and Southwest Ohio

When Back Pain Isn’t “Just Back Pain”

One moment you’re lifting a laundry basket or tying your shoes, and the next, you feel a sharp jolt of pain shoot down your leg. Or maybe it started as a dull ache that never quite went away. Either way, you’re left asking: Why does my back hurt like this?

One possible answer: a herniated disc.

At Vertrae®, we specialize in diagnosing and treating herniated discs using advanced, minimally invasive techniques. Our goal? To help you feel better, faster, and get Back on Track with confidence.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

Your spine is made up of bones (vertebrae) cushioned by discs. Think of them like shock-absorbing jelly donuts. These discs let your spine move, bend, and absorb impact.

But sometimes, a disc can rupture or “slip.” When the soft inner portion pushes out through a tear in the tougher outer layer, it’s called a herniated disc (also known as a ruptured or slipped disc).

If that disc presses on a nearby nerve, it can cause radiating pain, numbness, or weakness, especially in your legs.

Signs You Might Have a Herniated Disc

Not all back pain is caused by a disc problem, but certain symptoms are classic red flags:

✅ Sharp or burning pain in your lower back or buttock

✅ Radiating pain down one leg (often called sciatica)

✅ Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the foot or leg

✅ Pain that worsens when sitting, bending, or coughing

✅ One-sided symptoms (left or right leg only)

💡 Pain may come and go, or it might be constant. Either way, it’s your body’s way of signaling something’s not right.

Why It’s More Than “Just Back Pain”

A herniated disc doesn’t always scream for attention. For some, it’s subtle. For others, it’s severe and debilitating. Either way, if pain interferes with your daily life, sleep, or movement, it deserves real answers.

Your spine supports everything you do. Getting an accurate diagnosis is the first step toward feeling like yourself again.

Can a Herniated Disc Heal on Its Own?

In many cases, yes. At Vertrae®, we always start with conservative care, including:

• Physical therapy

• Anti-inflammatory medications

• Posture and activity adjustments

• Epidural steroid injections

This approach works well for many. But if the disc continues to irritate a nerve, or if weakness begins to develop, we may discuss surgical options.

What If It Doesn’t Get Better?

Don’t worry. Modern spine surgery isn’t what it used to be. At Vertrae®, our procedures are:

✅ Minimally invasive

✅ Performed outpatient at our state-of-the-art ASC in Miamisburg

✅ Focused on fast recovery and real results

Depending on your spine and symptoms, we may recommend:

🔧 Discectomy

A targeted procedure that removes the herniated portion of the disc—relieving nerve pressure.

🦴 Laminectomy

Creates more space for the nerve by removing a small part of bone near the nerve root.

🛡️ Barricaid® Implant

Seals the hole left by a discectomy and helps prevent re-herniation. It’s an innovative step toward long-term relief without repeat surgeries.

When More Advanced Options Are Needed

If your disc is severely worn down, or your spine is unstable, other options may be considered:

🔩 Spinal Fusion

Stabilizes the spine by joining two vertebrae together, stopping painful movement.

💿 Disc Replacement

Replaces the damaged disc with an artificial one, often ideal for younger or more active patients seeking to preserve motion.

No matter what your MRI shows, we never jump to surgery. We match each treatment plan to your body, your lifestyle, and your long-term goals.

You’re Not Alone. And You’re Not Stuck.

We see patients every day who’ve tried to push through herniated disc pain, until it finally became too much. You don’t have to “just live with it.”

At Vertrae®, we combine deep spine expertise with a compassionate, personalized approach. And with Dr. Kamal Woods—a dual fellowship-trained spine surgeon—leading your care, you can trust that every step is guided by experience.
