Real Relief for Diabetic Neuropathy: How Spinal Cord Stimulation Is Changing Lives

Why Diabetic Nerve Pain Can Be So Hard to Treat

Diabetic neuropathy affects more than 50% of people with diabetes over their lifetime. It often begins as tingling or numbness in the feet but can progress into burning, stabbing, or electric-shock-like pain that’s especially severe at night or during rest.

This type of pain, caused by nerve damage from chronically high blood sugar, doesn’t always respond to medications, physical therapy, or injections. And unfortunately, standard pain management options often come with side effects or diminishing returns.

That’s where Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) comes in, offering targeted, long-lasting relief when other treatments fall short.

A Natural Continuation of Our Neuromodulation Series

In our recent blog “Real Relief, Not Just a Patch”, we shared how spinal cord stimulation has helped many patients with Persistent Spine Pain Syndrome (known as Failed Back Spine Surgery or Post Laminectomy Syndrome) find real, lasting relief, even after surgery. But did you know that diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is now one of the fastest-growing and most promising applications of SCS?

At Vertrae®, we’ve expanded our treatment pathways for patients suffering from chronic, medication-resistant diabetic nerve pain, and the results have been life-changing.

How Does SCS Help with Diabetic Neuropathy?

Originally developed for post-surgical nerve pain, SCS is now FDA-approved for painful diabetic neuropathy. It’s helping thousands of patients nationwide finally reclaim their lives.

How It Works:

  • A small device is implanted under the skin with leads placed near the spinal cord.
  • The device sends gentle, targeted electrical impulses to disrupt pain signals.
  • These signals “calm down” overactive nerves, especially those damaged by diabetes.
  • The result: Less pain, better function, more control.

Most patients report:

  • 50% to 70% pain reduction
  • Better sleep
  • Increased mobility and walking distance
  • Reduced dependence on medication

Who’s a Candidate?

We carefully evaluate each patient to ensure SCS is a good fit. For diabetic neuropathy, ideal candidates:

  • Have pain for 6+ months that hasn’t improved with other treatments
  • Report burning, electric, or shooting pain in the feet, legs, or hands
  • Have well-managed diabetes (stable A1c and blood sugar levels)
  • Are not candidates for other surgical procedures
  • Want to reduce reliance on medications that cause brain fog, fatigue, or dizziness

We also rule out patients if there’s active infection, uncontrolled blood sugar, or psychological conditions that may impair success.

What Makes Vertrae® Different?

Most patients are never told SCS is an option for diabetic neuropathy. At Vertrae®, we believe patients deserve to know every path to relief. Here’s what sets our care apart:

  • Expert diagnosis from our neurosurgery-led team, not just pain management
  • Multidisciplinary care that includes neuromodulation, therapy, and diabetes support
  • On-site trial phase lets you “test” the device before committing
  • Access to the latest technologies—including paresthesia-free and closed-loop stimulators
  • Whole-patient guidance—we walk with you every step of the way

The Process: Trial First, Then Long-Term Relief

You don’t commit to a permanent implant right away. The journey begins with a short, reversible trial:

Step 1: The Trial (7–10 days)

  • A small wire (lead) is inserted near your spine during a quick outpatient procedure.
  • The lead connects to an external stimulator worn on your belt.
  • You go home and “test drive” the therapy in your real life.

If you experience 50% or more pain relief, we proceed to a permanent implant.

Step 2: The Implant

  • The final system includes internal leads and a small battery placed under the skin.
  • The entire procedure is done outpatient and is minimally invasive.
  • You’ll control your settings using a smartphone app or remote.

If the trial doesn’t work, the lead is removed and nothing is permanent.

What Can You Expect After SCS?

Most patients with diabetic neuropathy report dramatic improvements within weeks.

You may experience:

✔️ Reduced pain in the feet and legs

✔️ Improved sleep quality

✔️ Less reliance on medications

✔️ Easier walking and movement

✔️ More confidence and independence

Recovery from the permanent implant typically takes 4–6 weeks, and our team supports you throughout, from programming your device to adjusting settings for maximum relief.
