Meet Shawn: The Steady Hand Behind Vertrae® Physical Therapy

Patient. Organized. Always in Motion.
In Vertrae®’s physical therapy department, progress isn’t just measured in reps or minutes on the clock. It’s felt in small victories, steady encouragement, and the calm reassurance that someone is guiding the process. That’s where you’ll find Shawn.

As our Physical Therapy Coordinator and PT Aide, Shawn keeps the wheels turning—sometimes literally, moving between patients on the therapy floor, and other times behind a desk, making sure insurance verifications and scheduling run seamlessly. No matter the role he’s filling that day, he brings the same qualities: patience, attentiveness, and a quiet determination to help people move forward.

“I hope every patient walks in and feels comfortable and confident in the care they’re being provided.”

Why Healthcare—and Why Here

Shawn’s interest in healthcare started early, long before he knew the term “patient care.”

“My mom was a nurse and my dad was a doctor, so growing up I was always fascinated with healthcare and knew I wanted some sort of career in that field.”

When he found Vertrae®, it felt like the right fit, not just for his skills, but for his values.

“It’s such a great environment that the patients really enjoy and feel comfortable in, and all of my co-workers are awesome.”

It’s the kind of place where both staff and patients feel supported, and Shawn works every day to help keep it that way.

Balancing Two Worlds: Hands-On Care & Behind-the-Scenes Support

Shawn’s role is a blend of direct patient interaction and behind-the-scenes logistics. Some days, he’s hands-on, guiding patients through exercises, encouraging their progress, and working closely with our head physical therapist. On other days, he’s managing schedules, verifying insurance, and making sure the PT side of the practice runs like a well-tuned machine.

No matter what the day holds, the outcome he’s most proud of is the same:

“Seeing our patients make progress throughout their PT journeys.”

The Mindset That Keeps Him Going

Like all great patient care professionals, Shawn knows some days are harder than others, both for patients and for the team. His approach?

“Reminding myself that we’re making such positive impacts on our patients’ lives and overall wellbeing.”

It’s the same mindset he shares with others: take everything one step at a time and focus on the positives.

Life Beyond the Clinic

When he’s not at Vertrae®, Shawn’s still on the move. He loves walking with his wife and their dog, and he’s game for just about any sport—pickleball, golf, you name it.

His favorite way to recharge after a long day? A good book, a great meal, and maybe thinking about the Buffalo Bills’ next win (he’s a huge fan).

And while he’s already mastered the art of organization and teamwork, there’s one skill still on his list:

“I think it would be awesome if I could learn and master playing the guitar.”

Final Thought

Shawn’s work might not always be center stage, but it’s essential to the rhythm of Vertrae®’s physical therapy department. He’s the reason schedules run smoothly, patients feel supported, and progress happens—step by step, rep by rep.

And whether he’s helping a patient through their first PT session or making sure tomorrow’s schedule is ready, Shawn is proof that in spine care, the people who keep things moving are just as important as the milestones themselves.
