Looking Back, Moving Forward
As we close another remarkable year at Vertrae®, we’re turning the spotlight toward the person whose vision started it all: Dr. Kamal Woods.
A leader. A surgeon. A husband. A father. A listener.
He reminds us daily that great spine care begins with human connection: with listening first, acting with compassion, and building something better than what came before.
This season of gratitude is the perfect time to reflect on the mission Dr. Woods brought to life… and the future he continues to shape for patients across Dayton and Southwest Ohio.
Meet Dr. Kamal Woods, A Rare Blend of Skill and Heart
When you meet Dr. Woods, you know instantly:
This isn’t just a skilled spine surgeon.
This is someone who sees people, who listens with intention and leads with humility.
One of only a few surgeons in the nation who is double fellowship-trained in both orthopedics and neurosurgery, Dr. Woods completed advanced spine training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and later earned an MBA from Johns Hopkins University to bring visionary leadership to patient care.
But ask any patient what makes him different?
It’s not his credentials.
It’s his presence.
Dr. Woods is described again and again as calm, patient, and deeply personal. He builds trust, and doesn’t rush. He treats every person like a partner, not a problem.
Why He Built Vertrae®
Years ago, Dr. Woods had a bold thought: What if spine care wasn’t just efficient; what if it was deeply human?
He had seen too many patients fall through the cracks, shuffled from imaging to PT to specialists, without clear answers or continuity. So, with his wife, Loredana Woods, RN, by his side, they reimagined what a patient-first spine model could look like.
They built Vertrae®, a spine-only center designed around compassion, precision, and seamless care.
From your first consultation to advanced surgery and recovery, Vertrae® exists to do one thing:
Help people get back to the life they love.

The Vision That Guides It All: MotionFirst™
At the core of Dr. Woods’ philosophy is a simple but powerful idea: Motion matters.
Motion is how we show up in our lives, how we work, walk, hug, travel, garden, live.
That’s why the Vertrae® team champions MotionFirst™, a care model that:
- Preserves movement wherever possible
- Avoids unnecessary spinal fusion
- Prioritizes pain relief and long-term quality of life
- Uses robotic precision to protect tissue and function
In other words, we don’t just fix what hurts. We restore what matters.
The Heart Behind the Innovation
Dr. Woods is not only a leader in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted spine surgery, he’s also an early adopter of life-changing motion-preserving procedures:
- Cervical disc replacement
- ReActiv8® for low back pain
- Barricaid® to prevent repeat herniation
- Basivertebral nerve ablation for vertebrogenic pain
- Spinal cord stimulation for chronic nerve pain
- PRP and other regenerative treatments
Each tool he brings to Vertrae® is chosen with care, based on outcomes, evidence, and one question: “Will this help our patients move forward?”
Gratitude for the People Who Make It Possible
As we look back on 2025, Dr. Woods is especially thankful for:
- The patients who trust Vertrae® with their stories
- The team who brings compassion and expertise to every appointment
- And the future, where innovation and humanity move hand in hand
That same spirit inspired this year’s launch of the Vertrae 360 Podcast, a new way to educate, uplift, and connect.
“At Vertrae, we don’t just treat the spine. We care for the whole person.”

His story reminds us that great medicine is never just clinical.
It’s personal.
