“I’ve Tried Stretching, Massage, Even Ice… But the Tightness Keeps Coming Back.”
If you’ve ever had:
• stubborn muscle tightness
• deep knots that just won’t release
• low back or neck pain that flares under stress
• postural pain that returns no matter how much you stretch…
…you’ve probably wondered, “Why won’t this go away?”
The good news? There’s more we can do, and it starts with understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.
One of the most effective, evidence-informed techniques we offer in physical therapy at Vertrae® is cupping therapy.
No, it’s not just trendy. And no, it’s not just for Olympic athletes.
Cupping therapy is commonly used in physical therapy to treat back pain, neck pain, and muscle tightness, especially when traditional treatments haven’t provided lasting relief.
Cupping is a powerful soft tissue technique that helps reduce pain, increase mobility, and restore healthy tissue glide, particularly when traditional methods hit a plateau.
At Vertrae®, Presley, our experienced and highly skilled PTA, uses cupping to help patients move more freely, recover faster, and finally release tight areas that have felt “locked up” for months — or even years.
What Is Cupping Therapy and What Does It Actually Do?
Cupping therapy involves placing small silicone or vacuum-based cups on the skin to gently pull the tissue upward. This creates space in the connective tissue layers (called fascia), improves blood flow, and helps release areas of tension that feel stuck, especially in the low back, neck, hips, or shoulders.
Unlike massage, which presses into tissue, cupping decompresses it. That’s part of why it works so well when traditional methods aren’t enough.
Patients often say it feels like a deep stretch from the inside out, oddly satisfying, not painful. And the relief? Often immediate.
How Cupping Helps with Stubborn Pain and Stiffness
Let’s say you’ve had back pain for years, but MRIs look fine. Or maybe your neck feels tight no matter how much you stretch. Sometimes it’s not about strength or structure, it’s about tissue that no longer glides smoothly. That’s where cupping shines.
By restoring soft tissue mobility, cupping:
- Reduces overactive nerve sensitivity
- Boosts local blood flow
- Allows better movement between layers of muscle and fascia
- Helps your body “reset” tight or overworked areas
- Makes follow-up therapy more effective
We often use it for low back pain, SI joint tension, neck and shoulder tightness, hip restriction, and even post-surgical stiffness, especially when progress feels slow or plateaued.
Patients frequently tell us:
“I didn’t expect much, but after one session, I moved better than I had in months.”
What a Cupping Session at Vertrae® Feels Like
Every session is different because every patient is different. At Vertrae®, cupping isn’t a stand-alone service. It’s thoughtfully blended into your physical therapy plan, based on what your movement, posture, and pain patterns tell us.
During your session, Presley may:
- Warm up the area with light movement or manual therapy
- Apply silicone cups to specific muscle groups
- Gently glide the cups across stiff tissue
- Guide you through active movement while the cups are in place (called dynamic cupping)
You might feel a gentle pulling sensation, but most patients describe it as relieving — like something tight is finally letting go.
You may notice small red marks afterward (especially if tissue tension is high). These fade within a few days and are part of the body’s healing response.
Is Cupping Safe?
When performed by a trained professional, yes, very. Presley is certified in cupping and uses it only when clinically appropriate. Some patients may experience temporary soreness, like after a deep massage, but serious side effects are rare.
We always screen for conditions that may make cupping unsafe, such as active infections, fragile skin, blood disorders, or cardiovascular concerns. If you’re a good candidate, we’ll walk you through everything before starting.
Real Stories, Real Results
Patients often come in skeptical, especially if they’ve been through multiple rounds of PT elsewhere without relief.
But after cupping? They move more easily. Sleep better. Even walk taller.
We often hear:
“That spot in my back hasn’t moved in years — and now it does.”
“This is the first thing that gave me lasting relief.”
“I didn’t realize how much that tightness was holding me back.”
Why Vertrae® Offers Cupping as Part of Spine Care
Because your spine doesn’t move in isolation. It depends on the quality of the tissues surrounding it: fascia, muscles, joints, and nerves.
Cupping supports our motion-preservation philosophy by:
- Freeing up restricted movement
- Reducing unnecessary pain signals
- Helping you move better before you ever need to think about surgery
We’re here to treat the root cause — not just the symptoms.
When Movement Feels Stuck, There’s a Way Forward
You don’t have to live with chronic tightness or stubborn pain that keeps coming back.
If you’ve stretched, massaged, and foam-rolled without lasting relief, cupping therapy might be the missing piece that finally gets your body moving the way it should.
Vertrae® proudly serves Dayton, Centerville, Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Eastern Indiana, and the Greater Southwest Ohio region.
As a spine-only outpatient surgery and rehab center, we bring together advanced recovery tools and highly personalized care with people like Presley guiding every step.
